Hip Replacement Surgery

Advanced Options for Hip Pain — From Resurfacing to Total Replacement

Dr. Petty performs both hip resurfacing and total hip replacement, selecting the optimal solution based on your age, anatomy, bone quality, and performance expectations.

Hip Resurfacing —
Bone Preservation for High-Demand Patients

Dr. Petty has performed the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing procedure for over 25 years following specialized training with Dr. Peter Brooks of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the pioneers in advanced hip reconstruction.

Importantly, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing system is FDA-approved in the United States for male patients only, and careful patient selection is critical to achieving optimal outcomes.

The defining advantage of BHR is its bone-preserving design. Unlike traditional total hip replacement, the femoral head is not removed. Instead, it is resurfaced with a smooth spherical cap composed of cobalt, chrome, molybdenum, and titanium. The acetabulum (socket) is fitted with a matching metallic shell, creating a durable metal-on-metal articulation engineered for strength and stability.

The BHR has allowed athletes to resume their careers in professional and Olympic-level athletics, including the NBA, NHL, and Olympic fencing — something conventional hip replacements have been unable to do.

Published data demonstrate greater than 98% survivorship at 20 years in properly selected male patients, among the best long-term results of any hip implant available.

For the right candidate, hip resurfacing offers:

  • Maximum bone preservation

  • Exceptional long-term durability

  • Biomechanics that closely replicate the natural hip

  • Potential return to high-impact athletics

  • A proven 20-year track record

Note: Production of the BHR is phasing out with limited availability. Dr. Petty remains optimistic about emerging alternatives.

Total Hip Replacement — Hybrid Bearing Technology for Longevity

Conventional Total Hip Replacement is an excellent option to treat severe degenerative changes in the hip from arthritis, trauma, and avascular necrosis.

Satisfaction rates are the highest in joint arthroplasty, with more than 95% reporting high levels of satisfaction with the procedure and outcomes. New technologies have increased the longevity of the implants to greater than 20 years, or longer.
