Hip Arthroscopy

Advanced Labral Repair and Hip Preservation

With precision and a patient-centered approach, Dr. Petty specializes in hip arthroscopy, focusing primarily on repairing the acetabular labrum to restore stability, relieve pain, and preserve natural hip function.

In addition to labral repair, Dr. Petty performs arthroscopic procedures to:

  • Reshape the femoral head to a normal contour (CAM lesion/Femoral Osteoplasty)

  • Reshape the edge of the hip socket (Pincer Lesion/Acetabuloplasty)

  • Repair torn abductor tendons (gluteus medius and minimus)

  • Effectively treat persistent greater trochanteric bursitis that has not responded to conservative care

Recognizing the delicate nature of hip joint access, Dr. Petty has refined the standard hip arthroscopy technique to make it gentler and safer. He employs a thoughtful outside-in approach, initiating entry just anterior to the hip capsule rather than relying on traditional canula placement directly into the distracted joint. This modification, inspired by the renowned German hip arthroscopist Dr. Michael Dienst, minimizes risk of iatrogenic damage to the labrum and significantly reduces the duration and intensity of traction applied to the hip. Less traction equals fewer complications.

Collaborative Care

The result is a highly refined procedure that prioritizes tissue protection and patient comfort while delivering outcomes that align with the best published literature. Dr. Petty consistently achieves reliable success with labral repairs and maintains a complication rate notably lower than national and international benchmarks.

While Dr. Petty is fully equipped to perform a high volume of hip arthroscopies, he thoughtfully collaborates with and often refers appropriate cases to his esteemed colleague, mentor, friend, and internationally acclaimed hip arthroscopy pioneer, Dr. Thomas Byrd, also practicing in Nashville. This reflects Dr. Petty’s unwavering commitment to ensuring every patient receives the absolute highest level of specialized expertise available
